Week 8 – Journal Entry 8

Media influences our understanding about cybersecurity in various ways. For instance, many films have hackers hacking into some network, while others showcase people interpreting a live cyberattack. However, some films portray cybersecurity incorrectly, while others do it well. Some films show a hard drive with moving animation, but there are no animations of what files are doing in the real world. Sometimes, these cybersecurity concepts are glorified to look cool and to appeal to a non-cybersecurity audience. You can certainly do cool things with code, but you are not going to see cool visuals in the real world of how files behave. Some forms of media add terms like polymorphism for code that changes itself and code obfuscation to make cybersecurity hacking feel genuine and realistic. Hacking in such films may occur quickly for the sake of time, but it would take more time and interactions to accomplish any hacking tasks. At the end of the day, the amount of realism in these films that have hacking involved is more than enough to influence people’s perceptions about cybersecurity.
