In 2019 Megan Rapinoe and her teammates fought for equal pay and work conditions by suing U.S. Soccer. Not only did they sue the U.S. Soccer, but she also refused to meet with at the time President Trump after the team beat the Netherlands in the world cup. Rapinoe and her teammates used their platforms to show the inequalities of men and women. In sports, women are typically underpaid, do not get as much publicity, and do not get the same resources as men.
More recently, we saw multiple female NCAA Basketball Players come forward with some of the same issues. In the NCAA Tournament, the men’s teams had much better gym resources, a court to play on, and better merchandise than the women got. Upon women bringing up the inequalities in the tournament, the NCAA gave the women more gym equipment. The NCAA only did this after it blew up on social media and the news. Also, in a recent news article from CNN, the NCAA budget report showed they spent $13.5 million more for men’s basketball in 2018-2019. A lot of people overlook some of these issues by saying, “Well, men’s basketball is more popular and brings in more money.” This could be true but has nothing to do with these issues. Men and women should have the same opportunities and resources to get higher in their field no matter what.
Multiple newspapers, news channels, and social media accounts brought light to these problems for both of these events. Most showed the problems in a bad light to show people how bad it was and try to get things to change for the better, while others tried to make excuses for them. Megan Rapinoe made a huge impact on U.S. Soccer for the better. I think all of these women did great things for both of their industries that some are too scared to stick up for themselves.
