The first theme that stood out to me was the difference in societal norms depending on what state you are in. The video compares the cultures of New York vs. Atlanta, GA, and Chicago, IL. New York has a more fast-paced culture that I’m sure we all know about, whether that’s from personal experience or through social media or movies/TV shows. New York would be perfect for someone that is always on the go. The difference in pay depending on what state you work in is also mentioned. Many people see the high pay but fail to consider the cost of living as well. For instance, as the video says, cybersecurity analysts in New York earn a lot, but the high cost of living must also be considered. Salaries in this field can vary depending on many factors like location, experience, and government clearance. Having a government clearance isn’t something that’s always required, but it can set you apart from the competition. However, the video discusses how obtaining a clearance can be challenging for individuals with a history of drug use, DUIs, or other disqualifying factors. This highlights some discrimination that people may face for mistakes that they’ve made in the past. The next theme I noticed was the educational disparity in Boston, which is home to many Ivy League colleges. Someone looking to get into tech there would have tough competition and may feel out of place if they were to land a job vs. somewhere like Ohio. People with Ivy League educations often come from wealthy families, and for that reason, they tend to have an elitist attitude, and that can complicate things in the workplace when it comes to things like social equality. Lastly, toward the end of the video, a phrase is mentioned: “Perception is often more important than reality” when it comes to your resume. The phrase brings up concerns about whether it is ethical to lie or “reframe” your resume to make it seem that you’re more qualified for the job than you really are.

While watching this video, I noticed several social themes mentioned throughout.
