Adapted Lesson

Description of Original Activity

In the textbook, Four Corners 2, Unit 7, students will use comparative adjectives to compare products and then in pairs they will describe things they own. The textbook provides pictures of objects that contrast each other as well as vocabulary. This activity is good for getting the students to compare opposites using comparative adjectives and talk amongst each other to apply it to their items. This activity is relatively easy, and it is laid out simply for the students. It can be applied to many different age groups.

Strengths

  • It requires pair work which allows students to interact with each other.
  • It is easy to start off with by filling in the opposite for the pictures given, then it allows the students to work together to describe their own items.
  • It allows students to use multiple skills: listening, speaking, visual
  • It encourages the use of comparative vocabulary and grammar.

Weaknesses/Adaptation

The weaknesses of this activity are:

  •  Does not provide a large variety of vocabulary
    • Adaptation: give the students the opportunity to think of more comparisons and put them into a larger word bank.
  • This activity is very bland and does not offer much creativity
    • Allow the students to describe their partners items rather than their own

Revised Activity

Objectives: Students will be able to…

  • Use comparative vocabulary to compare two items
  • Describe their own items using the vocabulary

Instructions

  1. Teacher first goes over the list of vocabulary provided
  2. As a class come up with more comparative words and discuss how we use them and why they are important.
  3. Students will work individually to fill out the activity in the book. We will discuss it as a class and then break off into pairs
  4. In pairs, students will discuss their partners items and describe it to them. Vice versa
