Philosophy of Music Education

The purpose of music education is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to develop a new form of creativity and self-expression due to the amount of freeform music can withhold, Not only that, students are also introduced to diverse cultural traditions, gaining a larger understanding of the world and gaining a sense of unity since there are many different types of music in various cultures and other parts of the world. Altogether, music brings people together and creates a community space and a way for everyone to connect.

Within the classroom, students take on an active role and are highly encouraged to engage in the learning of music by exploring new ways to express their creativity in their ways. Music can be anything and anything can be used to create music. With this in mind, music can be a form of therapeutic way to cope with anything going on within the student’s mind or life just by experimenting with different ways to create music. As the student learns more about music, they can explore different styles of music, sounds, and musical skills that students could use to bring out their artistic abilities and explore their curiosity.

As a music educator, one of the main components I prioritize is to ensure that my students are in a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Regardless of any student’s background, every single student should feel valued within my classroom. I hope to strive and motivate my students by dipping their toes into a new form of creativity while guiding them through the process of learning how to perform. My goal as a teacher is not only to achieve my students becoming strong musicians whether it be now or later in their future, but to ensure that my students feel loved within my environment and gain a passion for music that lasts a long while.

While being a music educator is a field that is predominantly within the classroom, the role I would play as a music teacher would be beneficial to our community in terms of teaching diversity within the community. By arranging performances for my students, their parents and/or friends could also learn about the different sides of music that are barely discussed amongst people. For example, bringing up types of music from different cultures or different countries for my students to perform would be a way to share these innovations created by people with different backgrounds to bring a sense of unity within music. That way, there can be a bridge created between our cultures versus those who are beyond different so we can celebrate different cultures in different parts of the world.
