Assignment Takeaway 5: Social Anxiety & Cultural Norms
In assignment 5 I found an article regarding anxiety and how cultural norms may play a role in that. Social anxiety is something that is experienced across all cultures and countries. In collectivistic countries such as Japan, Korea, China, Argentina, etc. there is a higher level of social anxiety. A correlation was found towards socially avoidant behaviors and anxiety. Social norms affect social anxiety, the etiology of social anxiety may come from that of the collectivistic norms. anxiety could be due to other factors as well.

I took a Health Psychology course in the previous semesters and learned about how to deal with anxiety and where anxiety and stress may stem from. This article resonated with me because I have anxiety and stress sometimes due to the norms that are established in my culture. Since relocation back home due to the pandemic I have taken up other roles that I didn’t have when I was in Norfolk.
