Assignment Takeaway 4: Gender Depicted in Different Cultures and How That Looks Like

In the forth assignment we were asked to look at six to ten ads that represented the gender roles in North America as well as another region of our choice. I chose Latin America because that is where my parents are from. Growing up I not only saw machismo first hand in my culture but I also saw it in the ads. Seeing the newer ads shown now a days was shocking; I never expected to see gender roles being changed in a region where machismo is prevalent.

As for that of North American ads, perhaps because I was born in a different age where women sought work and were more independent, these ads were not as surprising. What was surprising was seeing more women in positions of power. Usually you’d see a CEO as a man, but seeing women in these roles show a change in these dynamic roles. Men although not shown in the ads I included were also seen as stay at home dads, It seems like people are not afraid to change the stereotypes that are assumed by gender.

I come from a mix of two different cultures, because of this I feel like I am able to pick and chose what gender roles I choose to practice in my life. Personally, I feel like i’m very independent and when I do decide to start a family, I’d need a husband that share similar beliefs as I. I don’t want to “clock into a second shift” after a day at work. The picture I chose demonstrates that women are empowered. Rosie the Riveter was an icon for women in 1940s and stood for women breaking those stereotypical gender roles.
