Assignment Takeaway 2: American Values, Foreign Views

In the second assignment we read about American values that Foreigners look down upon. Sometimes there is a cultural bias against one another because of this, if people were open to see different view points on these values biases may be avoided. I chose the value of materialism. I was born in the US but to foreign parents. I do believe that I hold foreign views on some American values. This black refrigerator is my childhood refrigerator. My mom says we won’t buy a new one until this one goes bad, although the ice machine broke. The same is said for the electric stove we have; cracked but still working.

As an American I do believe that I work hard for the things that I have, I don’t share that belief when it is applied to someone else. Everyone has their own situation and affords what they can when they can. I sometimes do treat myself to materialistic things when it is a necessity not a want. I asked my mom about some of the things Americans valued and was not so surprised as to what her views were.
