Cultural understanding
The most interesting cultural reading that we did in class was the one that talked about how schooling is done in Spain and Latin America. The way schooling is set up in Latin America and Spain is so much better than in the US. In the US students are taught the same thing every year from 9th grade all the way through sophomore year of college basically because we have general education courses that we are required to do from our school. Students in Latin America and Spain get exposure to many different disciplines through highschool and most choose their major by college. while in the US most students in college change majors multiple times because we haven’t been exposed to careers like Latin America and Spain. They also have very cheap if not free college in those countries unlike in the US where its tens of thousands of dollars per year. The US really needs to fix the schooling system because it is truly hurting its students and it isn’t doing anyone in any grade justice. This pandemic from Covid shows how terrible the system is at all levels. Students are definitely feeling robbed out of an education after this last year because learning online is terrible.
Conclusion
The Spanish course has definitely helped me understand a lot more about Spain and Latin Americas culture. It also helped me understand what I need to do for the next time I do Spanish. I really need to focus on speaking with other students, and practicing grammar because those definitely were the most difficult for me to do. I overall, thought the class was fun at times but definitely hard at times.
