I chose “A Rose for Emily” and “The Oval Portrait” to analyze through a structuralist lens. I felt like these two pieces were a great fit because of their complex underlying ,meanings, profound literary devices that can be examined, and the ambiguities of the authors.
Honestly, this was my first sandbox so I wasn’t very happy with the way this one turned out because I didn’t stay focused on my topic. Plus, I think structuralism is one of the harder theories to comprehend. I think this could of been built upon if I stuck to a certain thesis or question and analyzed it throughout my essay. I was happy with the texts I got to read though, they were great reads and I thought they worked well being examines through a structuralist lens.
