Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to your
experiences with technology. Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate
to each level of need.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in
1943 which suggests that human motivation is based on fulfilling a hierarchy of needs, starting
from the most basic physiological needs and progressing towards higher-order psychological
needs. The first level of Hierarchy needs is physiological needs and it is the most basic
requirement for human survival. For example food, water,shelter and warmth. They can be
related to my experience with technology because tech facilitates access to food through various
means such as online grocery shopping. You have the ability to order online if places are busy.
The second level is safety and security and it involves the desire for physical and psychological
security, stability and protection from harm. In personal experiences, technology plays a crucial
role in addressing my safety. For example I have 2 home security systems. This shows how
technology enables the installation of sophisticated home security systems equipped with
surveillance systems, and cameras. The third level is called Love and belongingness. It involves
the desire for social connection, intimacy, friendship and a sense of belonging. This relates to my
experience because I have social media platforms such as twitter and instagram. These platforms
facilitate communication, sharing of experiences, and maintenance of relationships. The fourth
level is called Esteem, and it involves the desire for self esteem, confidence, and achievement.
Examples of how it relates to me is that performance tracking helps me throughout my day to
day life. It offers access to various platforms and online courses, which enable me to acquire new
skills. My mastering skills can boost your self esteem. The last and final level is called self
actualization. This level represents the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and it involves
the pursuit of personal growth and fulfillment. Examples can be a person creating a tool or
business and they have the opportunity to share their ideas of their work/piece
