I feel like this semester I have learned a lot from where I first started in this course. Between completing the modules, items to archives, assignment takeaways, etc. I feel like I have learned a lot and grown in my knowledge of Social Psychology. Although I have not completed every assignment perfectly, I have been able to complete most of the course objectives. As this class went on, I realized that this course has further implications than just a topic.

When we went over biases, persuasion, prejudice, and discrimination, I realized that this is the reason why racism and other harmful social constructs are present until this day. Many people underestimate psychological factors in social spaces, which leads to harmful patterns of behavior across multiple individuals. Although I loved social psychology from the very beginning, I will now, take it even more seriously in how I interpret the behaviors of others. I also will be able to recognize harmful behaviors that I may partake in or unconsciously be promoting because of the impact of this course.

Based on the reading material, the evolutionary principles behind relationships make sense. The concurrent concept of sexual conflict also makes sense. Sexual conflict is the concept that when needs are not met based on gender due to the opposite gender’s interfering needs, it creates tension and dissatisfaction. These concepts are both discussed by evolutionary psychologists as being results of the adaptations of human beings. These also may be the basis of gender-based sexual conflict.

Based on my experience and consumption of popular media, men get mad at women for threats to their freedom. Some men want to be able to do whatever they want without contest or challenge. Women often get mad at men for being emotionally uninvolved. Women love and seek the attention of men (rightfully so) because it allows them to express their love language.

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand one’s emotions and how to control them. It has to deal with being emotionally aware and understanding the source of the emotions. Self Regulation is a technique used to control one’s emotions into a manageable form. These psychological concepts go hand and hand. The difference is that self-regulation is an action or technique, while Emotional Intelligence refers to the overarching traits that deal with managing emotions.

I display my emotional intelligence by rapidly moving my eyes when things get tense. It distracts me from becoming emotionally overwhelmed, especially in states of being where I am tense. I also perform breathing exercises by taking breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. My uncle taught me this because the nostril has better chances of filtering out air bacteria than the mouth. The mouth also is better for releasing air so that the nose does not get overworked. My emotional intelligence could improve most when I am angry. Especially when that anger comes from a place of hurt.

From left to right (and top to bottom) is the Advertisement from an incredible source, an advertisement from a credible source, and an advertisement from an attractive source. What makes Picture A a noncredible source is a fact that the snack companies, respective of their product, use false labeling information coupled with colorful art and a fun mascot to push their own products to kids. It is obvious that they try to use these marketing techniques to make children think their favorite snacks are healthy and in their best interest. What makes picture B a credible source, is the fact that NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health) is a source of information for individual and family mental health. They made an infographic that describes a mental health phenomenon uses a call to action. Picture C relies on sourcing from the attractiveness of its endorsers. Shaquille O’Neil is a famous and lovable basketball player that Papa John uses to gain access to communities who admire his sports, his comedy, and his businesses.

To review for the test I initially wrote notes based on the textbook. I also incorporated notes from the jeopardy review videos. I used the first part of the week to read the appropriate textbook sections and the latter half to review with the jeopardy review questions.  On my end, I was not able to see the correct answer but I am able to see what I previously selected. With this information, I must go back into the book and see how I got each piece wrong. What I did notice was that I got three of the application and scenario questions wrong. This means I need to work on how I identify social psychology constructs in real-world situations.

Due to my isolated nature, I have not had a chance to notice similar music tastes outside of my family. Many times, I engage in conversation, I do not usually discuss music. The most notable conversation about music I had was probably when I discussed with my friend that I love the realm of electronic music. He said he also loved electronica and since then we always check on each other and we plan on hanging out sometime soon. We also share similar values since we both grew up in Christian households and were raised very similarly despite being of different races.

In addition, my family and I share common interests in music because we are the same demographic, we are all singers, and we are chirstian. We all have preferences for 90s and 2000s Gospel.

I feel that I am a decent student. I am an AB student with a 3.3 current GPA. I am efficient, but occasionally suffer from a lack of motivation, bouts of procrastination, and emotionally intense frustration. On the self-efficacy test I scored a 27 out of 40. This could be due to the fact that I often don’t feel in control of my time management, planning, or my schedule. Although I make a planner, when any change happens to my mental schedule I become disoriented. This effects my schoolwork, which lowers my self-efficacy. When I feel less confident, I notice that I am less probable to finish work early.

Understanding social psychology would give me practical skills in understanding behaviors and social cognition. I will be able to use the social skills I learned in this class to make a positive impact on people by understanding how my actions will be perceived. I will also be able to learn how to make successful close and intimate relationships with people. I will also understand how to address social biases as well as prejudice and discrimination. I expect to learn a lot from this course and to be able to apply my learning to the real world. I plan on studying and making sure I apply what I learn to increase my contextual learning and memory.
