Philosophy and Goals

Purpose of Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to create my own personal philosophy of nursing drawing from what I have learned and experienced as a nursing student in the program thus far.

My Nursing Philosophy

Nurses have a responsibility to embody their core values towards all persons and adversity and to exhibit selflessness, professionalism, and the utmost compassion in order to maintain the best environment in which the patient can thrive.

Educational Goals

As a first-year nursing student in the ODU School of Nursing, one of my goals for the end of this semester is to find a solid routine of balancing my social, academic, and personal life to prevent burnout. I found that there were several times during my first semester of nursing school that I allowed my academics to take over my life, which easily lead to fatigue and sometimes physical sickness. I must remember that as a nurse and an advocate for good health practices, I must learn to take care of myself and implement those same practices into my own life as well. In four semesters, I plan on graduating from the ODU School of Nursing with Honors and moving on to taking and passing the NCLEX to officially become a registered nurse. Some of my long-term goals in the nursing profession include continuing to become more proficient in time management and upgrading my interpersonal skills among my healthcare team. Eventually, I plan on earning an advanced degree to become a nurse-midwife. With my ultimate goal being to specialize in midwifery, I find that my nursing philosophy is easily applicable as the nurse-patient relationship is pertinent between a mother giving birth to her child and the nurse and healthcare team.
