Assignment Takeaways

AT2

With this assignment, I learned that culturally, there are many different values among people, and they are not necessarily the same values across the different cultures. I opted to compare the value of change as an American to how other cultures view change. It turns out that a lot of the other cultures in the world are more traditional and do not value change much, if at all. On the other hand, Americans are all about change, and as an American, I personally value change as it has made me into the person that I am today. We, as people, are forever growing and changing even if other cultures choose to ignore this fact and continue on with their traditions and do things the way they always have, not that there is necessarily anything wrong with tradition. The assignment is personally relevant to myself because of the change I have gone through as a person throughout my life, which is why I chose to do the assignment on change. If it weren’t for change, I would not like the person that I would have been.

I chose this word cloud for change from Change management is no “Quick Fix” – The Management Philosopher – Dr. Glenn Hole (dr-glennhole.org) because it describes the benefits to change. Without change how does one progress?, improve?, grow? But change can also be challenging, revolutionizing, and require adapting.

For assignment one I learned that I fall between two of the five stages of intercultural sensitivity. This was mostly due to the face that I am very accepting of others’ cultures, and to an extent, will change certain behaviors to those of another’s culture out of respect to the person and their culture.  The assignment has made me realize that I do not encounter too many people of other cultures. Not regularly anyway. The people that I do meet, I do not interact with enough to need to know about their culture or to learn about their cultures. In this sense, the assignment was not necessarily personally relevant to my or anything I have encountered in life.
