Course Reflection

This semester has been such an incredible learning experience. I feel as though I have grown so much as a learner and as a teacher. I currently work as a preschool, and it was been so interesting to see various theories and activities fleshed out in front of my students. I have been able to apply my studies to my work in real time. In the beginning of this course, I wrote that I wanted to hone in on what it meant to me to be a teacher, and also the various ways that English could be taught and the impact this can have on children. Children are at the heart of a lot of what I do. I love my job, I babysit on the weekends, and I serve in the Children’s ministry on Sunday mornings. Children are sponges with an innate desire to learn and absorb their world. They deserve strong, positive, and encouraging teachers that can guide them through this; this is what it means to me to be a teacher.

Through our various assignments and projects, I have learned countless methods and activities that can vary in appropriateness for classrooms. There is a degree in variability for children, and there are different activities that can achieve these needs. All of our assignments have lead to me realizing this.

I really enjoyed this course. I am especially grateful for the conversation partner assignment. While I would have tutored those students regardless, this assignment gave me the opportunity to reflect on the importance of the work as well as what helped them the most. This real-world application was incredibly beneficial to my upcoming experience as an ESL instructor.
