How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

Engineers, a group of professionals are at the front line of assuring efficiency, performance, safety and security of physical and cyber space systems. In this internet of things (IoT) era, where physical objects and infrastructure are connected to the internet, through sensors, computational technologies, controls and networks, it is as important to assure the safety of networks associated with industrial control systems as it is for the enterprise system network, for vulnerability in a system can quickly turn serious and result in property damage, injuries, or deaths. Engineers can take many measures and steps to secure their cyber network systems and some of them are

  1. First, it is important to note that the fundamental cyber Security concepts are equally applicable for the cyber security of engineering systems. Assuring the confidentiality of cyber network ( like introducing strong encryption technology and applying good access control management systems), integrity of data and information flow and availability or assurance of systems performance are the important tasks engineers make sure their network be safe.
  2. Many security and safety technologies for engineering systems are five to ten years behind the typical information technology systems. This means that, considering the fast pace and ever changing cyber environment, the information flow between systems of engineering can be, restricted and vulnerable and be a cause for safety and security issues. Therefore updating and modernize engineering systems to tolerate the ever growing vulnerabilities and cyber-attack incidents is vital for the safety of engineering systems.
  3. With an increase in connectivity of machines and processors, engineers should provide alternative new, modified, or special purpose systems technology which keeps the machines with the technology. For example the SCADA traffic uses a single TCP port for communication. A hacker for example with a denial of service attack can easily flood the target’s TCP port with traffic and get the system to crush. For case like this engineers should find alternative ways using multiple ports to avoid a single failure incident.
