FOUR ETHICAL ISSUES ARISING FROM STORING ELECTRONIC DATA

There was no-time like now; information has been so valuable and powerful that decisions making from basic hiring practices to huge policy formations are dependent in the availability of stored data about individuals. Because this available data are becoming continuously influential in the daily lives of individuals, for example in determining insurance rate, information data handling practices and ethical issues arising from this is becoming significantly the topic of these times. At-least four ethical issues are arising from storing electronic information (data. These are privacy and security, accuracy, accessibility and ownership of the data property.

Privacy and security: people can share their individual information for the exchange of a popular apps and platform uses, for example Google. This private information is later shared for the purpose of the company’s financial gain or it can also be due to the lack of competent security infrastructure of the storing company in protecting the data. Information initially given in the confidence of trust is then later breached. Here the ethical questions to be raised are how information data are kept in private solely for the purpose of the individual who owns it? Is the data confidentially preserved?  How individual’s data can be appropriately used?  How long does a data be kept in the hands of a data storage company and similarly when it comes to security issue for example on occurrence of data breach, should there be an announcement of an incident to the individual?

Accuracy:  Individual’s information in the hands of apparently powerful, resourceful, popular tech companies must always be accurate. Because data found in a popular company’s platforms can easily be trusted, the responsibility of ensuring data accuracy should correspond the reputation, popularity and size of the company. Some of the accuracy issues raised from storing electronic information of an individual are the data integrity practices, procedures and policy a company undertakes. The occurrence of data alteration to disfigure the original and true data is ethically concerning for inaccurate data can easily determine the life of an individual at every corner of his or her life.

Accessibility: one issue users ethically concerned about is the accessibility of their information. What limitation and constraints does a company put over them in accessing their data? Which role holder (authorized personal) in the company’s directory is authorized to access their information? How strong are the company’s security, including physical security in protecting the databases? How the company’s access control practices are used to enhance the dignity and respect of the individual.   Property: Information ownership is a contested subject with possible property owners ranging from the initial creator (the individual) to the company who provides database storages.  Intellectual property rights are subjects related to this matter. Issues arising from storing electronic information in this regard is like, who owns the information? The owner who produced it or the company which provides its accessibility and management? Who is responsible for the loss of intellectual property, for-example a single album produced by an individual stored in cloud and then found in the hands of other?
