Reflection #3
After many weeks of preparation and research, our presentation had to be cancelled as no students had signed up for our topic. When I first heard of the cancellation, I was disappointed as my group, and I put a lot of effort into our project. We had a good plan of dividing the topic into sections and dividing our entire group among these sections. The smaller section I was divided into put a lot of effort and everyone knew what they had to do. Its unfortunate that our presentation was cancelled as it seemed like some of my group members were looking forward to it. Although this is the current situation, there are some positive things I can reflect upon even after the project.
Our preparation was very well planned, and my group members seemed to have no problems with the research and making the PowerPoint. I only had a few slides to present, and I practiced a few times leading up to the big presentation with the students. I made sure I understood the material so I could answer any questions the students had. I think our topic was really interesting (How a virus works?) as it relates to the current events happening in the world today. We talked about viruses in the beginning of the semester, and this topic provided me with even more information. Before this class, I honestly didn’t know much about viruses, but after researching and looking at the other information my group members provided, it was very eye opening. Looking at the complex systems the body has implemented in reaction to a virus was also very interesting to read and listen about. I read about different proteins, and the receptors on these proteins that detect the virus. Also, the body does a really great job with preventing the spread of the virus and has many different cells that can kill the virus. For example, the natural killer cells and the T-cells. The ability for the body to remember a virus that it has previously encountered is also really interesting.
In recent years, I haven’t done any work related to service learning, but it was an exciting idea when I first heard of it. It would’ve been really nice to provide this information to younger students. I also never heard of Brooks Crossing before this project, but the services they offer to young students is really amazing. Hopefully the students who attended other presentations learned some really good information. Also, I’m not the best at presenting information to people, as I do get nervous, but I believe my group had some very strong members. A lot of them seemed like they knew how to present well, and they all felt charismatic in my opinion. Although we were unable to present, I believe we would’ve done a really great job. I’m honestly glad I was able to work with the members in my group. They were all very nice and provided information whenever I had questions about the project.
It’s unfortunate that this was the ending situation to all of our hard work, but I still learned things about the community and information within genetics. Hopefully there will be other opportunities like this in the future. I personally believe that the members I worked with all deserve a good grade on this project. I believe they could vouch for me as well regarding the work I put into this project.
