Assignment 1

Personal Statement
Extinction is something we never want to happen to any wildlife species. Extinction
could cause an imbalance in the ecosystem and throw off other species. My main focus is on
marine life, where I want to work towards minimizing the chances of these marine species
becoming extinct. I personally grew up in the countryside of Carroll County, MD, where the only
animal related careers were veterinarian. Initially becoming a veterinarian seemed like a good
idea but after looking into other biology careers, marine life became more intriguing. Growing
up I was not around the ocean that often, mainly messing around in rivers and ponds, and not
being from the beach made wanting to explore it even more interesting. The ability to find new
species that have not yet been discovered, is what brought me to the ocean and wanting to
explore it. After realizing that the already discovered species are threatened with extinction, my
new goal in life is to protect these species from extinction.
For a family trip one summer, we decided to take a trip down to Florida. During our time
in Florida, we took a visit at The Turtle Hospital Rescue, Rehab, and Release center. Their main
focus was to take care of turtles that have suffered injuries from boating accidents, diseases, and
any other life threatening emergencies. During my time there I was able to tour the facility where
I saw different pools of water that contained the turtles that would be released and turtles that
would not survive in the wild anymore. There also was an education program that taught us
about the different types of turtles and their habitats. I was already interested in researching
marine life, however after my visit to the turtle hospital, I began to focus more on rescue and
rehabilitation programs for different marine species. After doing some research I came across a
foundation called The Turtle Foundation where they are focused on making the turtle habitats
protected, healthy, and eliminating the chance of extinction. Currently the foundation is located
in Indonesia and Boa Vista, meaning I would have the chance to work abroad. While this is a
distance away from home, I have also wanted to visit other countries outside of the United States
and a career like this can help. For the future, I would like to either work for The Turtle
Foundation or another organization similar to it.
There are millions of different species out there, either on land or in the sea, and all could
be at risk of extinction in the matter of a century. It is our responsibility to help minimize that in
any way possible. I personally want to help the sea life species minimize their risk of extinction
because I was already drawn to the sea from when I was young. It was not until recently that I
wanted to focus on turtle life and their habitats. This does not mean that I do not want to help
other marine species however I would like to focus on turtles. It will be a goal of mine to be
working for some turtle foundation, out on a boat, where I can get my hands dirty with helping
analyze and research ways to prevent further habitat damage. Currently I have not taken any
classes that specialize in marine life, but I am excited to start my journey into marine biology.
Graduation is a decent way away from now and it would be interesting to see if any of my goals
change leading up to graduation.
