During the last three months, I’ve embarked on a journey that took me far away from my comfort zone and challenged me in ways I hadn’t been challenged before. Coming from an exercise science background, I’m used to interpreting scientific information and applying it. In the masters level, it is required to give presentations on research that you conduct. In other words, you have to communicate effectively to an audience. This class helped me see another side of communication, and it helped me in my native exercise science classes.
From making a sports blog, to communicating with a sports communication professional, and educating myself on NIL, this sports media class had helped me grow in a positive way. The Sports communication world was something I was already familiar with from the outside looking in, I’ve been a consumer of sports media since I was a little kid. It never occurred to me that people in sport have to relay information and communicate in particular ways to peak the viewers or readers’ interest. I’m particularly proud of my sports media persona assignment because that gave me a chance to show the persona I’ve made outside of this class, and I can incorporate the principles I’ve learned in this class to that persona. It gave me a chance to open up and show the professor and the world more about what makes me passionate in life.
Now when I watch sports, (the NFL Draft was last night) I pay closer attention to the research and the personality of the show hosts. I observe what they say and what they don’t, and why. I’ve become a much more vigilant viewer, and I owe that to this class and the professor.
One last note to the professor-I can tell that sports communication is your passion as it beams through your non verbal communication. Thank you for making class fun with your gestures and enthusiasm about the topic. Good luck to you and your son on future runs, maybe I’ll see you out there!!
