In assignment 5 I wrote a journal critique about a study that was intended to see how Japanese children with Autism Spectrum Disorder interact with classmates and how their emotions are involved in the process. This study and article really opened up my eyes, especially since I knew how different the United States and Japan are culturally but have had the privilege of not having to know about the differences regarding children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In the United States, children in general are often pushed to be extroverted and this is also true for children with ASD. In Japan, however, children are often self-sacrificing and are anxious about their classmates not being able to understand where they are coming from regarding their differences.

The past assignment I wrote about involved how both gender and culture have differences between North America and Russia. This assignment was difficult at first because I was unsure as to how to compare the two countries, but I knew that these were the cultures I wanted to compare.
I ended up contrasting how women are portrayed in North American culture in a more sexual way versus what I found to be slightly more conservative in Russian advertisements. I also compared how different military advertisements are between the two cultures as well.

The assignment about finding your cultural identity abroad was really eye-opening to me as I read through Doriana’s blog posts about spending a semester abroad in Italy, learning about the black community in Italy and how it related to her own identity. I have always wanted to travel to Italy, primarily because of its historic beauty and my self-proclaimed love of mythology, history in general, and the Latin language. While I know that I would have an easier time fitting in due to my white privilege, I think that I would also benefit from learning more about Italy’s black community and those who have migrated to the country and the hardships they have faced and overcame.

The assignment based on American culture values is relevant to my life not just as an American who can relate to every value listed in the article, but especially because of my relationship with time and even more specifically, time management. The idea of scheduling everything to fit in to my ideal timeframe backfired on me when I was growing up, as I had the dreams of a child, those of which do not always align with adulthood and end up coming true.
