In August 2016, Collin Kaepernick decided to take a knee during the National Anthem at an NFL preseason game between the 49nrs and Packers… who knew this day would begin a change in history? Many didn’t understand why Kaepernick did this controversial act, some were baffled, some were enraged, and others became united together. The reason why Kaepernick did such a heinous decision was to protest the police brutality and injustice in the United States of America. Kaepernick lost many endorsement deals, fans, and even his career shortly came to end which was a disappointment for me who stood behind him. This event was communicated on major news outlets such as CBS, ESPN, CNN, and Fox News with that being, Fox News depicted as someone who didn’t support and stand by his country while CNN labeled him as a hero to nationwide. Many big social media platforms for example “TheShadeRoom” expressed their support for Kappernicks movement which helped him gain insight in a positive act, helping him get interest from other huge companies still keeping him relevant in the sports industry. At first the media surpressed Collin Kaepernicks career by downgrading his protest into a negative outcome by thinking his opinion is a wrongful symbol of patriotism. With that being, the media also enhanced his career by widening his spectrum to more of the African American power movement and showing others to always stand up and believe in yourself no matter the sacrifices or risk it takes. In 2018, Kappernick secured the deal of working with Nike in the annual “Just Do It” campaign, this brought more publicity and attention to his protest because it highlighted and documented his name into his story making it that more powerful. In conclusion, Collin Kaepernick played a huge role in aligning real world problems with national televised sporting event to broadcast a decsion that would change his life for a lifetime.
