SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

The Spanish country I researched was Mexico and through this research I found out some interesting things about the country whether it was through online websites or from Spanish based movies.

In Mexico workdays are long with some people even working all the way up to 10 hours a day. In Mexico they also take pride in taking a nap sometime between 12 pm to 3 pm every single day. In Mexico you also have to pass a certain test in order to attend college, and in college unlike the United States, its uncommon for students to live in dorms. If they do have dorms, they usually split time between home and the dorm. I feel like Mexico is so similar when it comes to work but as far as school they are different.

Engaging in Communities

Me personally, as someone who volunteers I think it’s very important to engage in your community.

I have volunteered in communities outside of mine. I love todo community food drives, go out and feed the homeless on holidays, and best of all, giving young children who may be less fortunate toys for Christmas.

Interpersonal Communication

In class we focused a lot on communication and creating conversations between people.

On the daily in class, we practiced intrapersonal communication by speaking with classmates. We were able to do this by learning to develop sentences and questions with our vocabulary in order to keep an active conversation going. We learned how to greet, dismiss, invite, and describe personal qualities in ourselves and others.

Presentational Speaking

Some Spanish speaking activities that I have completed this semester are conversating with classmates and also completing Spanish speaking projects.

Of course, pronunciation was probably my biggest challenge, but I eventually learned and caught on. I have spoken Spanish with my classmates which helped me gain communication skills. I also have done projects where I described some of my favorite places on campus as a speaking video presentation.

Presentational Writing

During my time in Spanish 101 this semester I have created written portions of all my presentations as well as I have had projects in written form.

For my speaking presentations I always started off writing them. Like for example with my last speaking presentation it started off as a written draft about my favorite places around campus. In this I wrote about the places that are my favorite and I also described them. I feel like throughout the semester with each assignment I became more comfortable and more confident in my writing.

Interpretive Listening

Listening is a very active part of my Spanish classes and learning modules. Every day I would hear my teacher speak in Spanish along with playing videos. For homework I would also have to listen to words being spoken.

This semester I have grown tremendously when it comes to speaking in Spanish. I have learned how to correctly pronounce words and phrases from mainly listen to my teacher speak. At times, she would also play videos in class to also help grasp my understanding of pronunciation. For homework, there would also be pronunciation questions where I would have to identify a word after the computer pronounced it.

Interpretive Reading

Throughout this semester whether in or out of class, I have many activities that I have read. From lessons online in Lingro Learning, to emails written in Spanish, and also articles online.

Just like any student, in the beginning I struggled fluently speaking and definitely reading in the Spanish. But throughout my reading I’ve learned to piece together phrases to figure out the message of the writing. I have also been able to tell different forms of writing whether it be a formal email, and educational text, or even a friendly text message between friends about where to meet for dinner. Throughout each assignment this semester I have gained more and more knowledge and confidence in my reading.
