For the fifth and final assignment paper, I chose to an academic journal about attachment and child-parent bonds comparing Japan and North American mothers and their children. I chose attachment because I am interested in childhood to adolescent developmental psychology to have a deeper understanding on how fragile children are to their environment and upbringing. I chose Japan in particular, because I plan to apply to a program to teach abroad once graduating. What I learned in the journal was very helpful for understanding how child-parent bonds can affect a child’s success as they grow, especially if they have traits that are considered “undesirable” by their cultures norms. This is something to keep vigil for in a classroom, especially with elementary age children.

Parent-child bonds are essential to a child’s well-being as they mature into adults and a strong determinant of how they will perform in other areas of life, such as school.
In my cognitive psychology class, we have learned how our memories are most vivid in our childhood to adolescence. Our earliest memories stick with us, as does what we learn in those foundational years, as it influences our perception on the world around us and of ourselves. Whether the child grows up in a country that leans toward individualism or collectivism, early parent-child bonds and how their parents view attachment plays an important, foundational role.
