Assignment TakeAway III
For this assignment, we were asked to find a blog post about a student who had studied abroad and reflect on their experience. I chose a student who had studied abroad in Japan, who was also a young black woman, named Carter. Reading about her experience helped me understand what to expect as a person of color, a rare sight in Japan. However in urban areas, it’s becoming increasingly more common but still incredibly rare.

I also watch videos like these to gain a better understanding.
To travel while black is to accept that there will be a common denominator of discrimination and prejudice no matter where you go. To educate oneself with how countries and cultures interact with foreigners first, then black people, than women, and whatever other label that will be a target for discrimination is to create schemas of at least having some idea of what to expect and prepare for such interactions. We just have to figure out ways to navigate an unfortunate universal disdain and fear of black people. Reading Carter’s blog helped me do just that. As well as create a wider perspective with learning about cross-cultural differences.
