Artifact 5 | How Long Can You Wait?

  • Parent–30 minutes
  • Older sibling–up to an hour
  • Boyfriend–30 minutes
  • Best friend–up to an hour
  • Colleague–10 minutes
  • Client–15 minutes
  • Boss–10 minnutes

I might be more lenient with my time in general. But I noticed for work-related interactions, I will wait the least. I expect them to know how crucial time is, so I’m not as lenient as I would be for the others on this list. As for parent and boyfriend, I would already see them most often so no need to wait for up to an hour. I’ll see them some other time soon. As for older sibling and best friend, I don’t get to see them as often so I would be willing to wait longer.

According to Hofstede’s (2001) study of time orientation, the U.S. falls into the Short-Term Oriented category with Spain, in which I remember always hearing had a “slower” tempo of life, and Brazil in this same study shows in the Long-Term oriented category, which I, again, always remember hearing had a very “lax” tempo of life so this chart is very interesting.

Sometimes I feel like I wait too long…but I can always keep myself entertained in the interim.

I chose this artifact because “time” is an interesting concept and even though it’s an objective concept, there are still as many perceptions of time as there are cultures.
