Similarity leads to attraction

Social psychologists have found in their research that there seems to be wisdom in the idea of “similarity leads to attraction.” 

In a sentence or two, why do you suppose this is true? 

Does this finding seem surprising to you?

            Person A:

“I suppose it is true because when people like similar things it is easier to have a conversation and understand where each person is coming from. This information isn’t that surprising to me.”

            Person B:

“I feel as if this is true especially in couples/relationships. We can see that similarity within friendships are true because they have the same interest. Within couple it give them something to bond over and shared passions. I don’t think it’s surprising at all.”

Opposites attract

Social psychologists have found in their research that there seems to be wisdom in the old saying, “Opposites attract.” 

In a sentence or two, why do you suppose this is true?

Person C: 

“opposite attract because the other person seems new, exciting and in some cases even “forbidden”. People usually want what they can’t have and those differences within us pull us closer to each other. No it doesn’t surprise me.”

Person D:

“I believe it’s true, for example for people, couples with somewhat of an opposite personality makes their relationship exciting by having one balance the other out. No it’s not surprising.”

Everyone that I asked to answer the question all that they weren’t surprised, which I think is a little confusing. How could both be unsurprising? Personally, I see how both can be true, opposite people attracting each other and similar people attracting each other, but I think it all depends on the people and what they want in a relationship. I think it shows my learning experience because people really are different and it’s cool to see how everyone thinks. It’s also cool getting to get my friends involved kinda as “test subjects”
