From the article it compares Japanese people to Western Caucasian people and Japanese people focus more on the eyes than the mouth for forms of displays of emotions. I thought it was interesting that even in emoticons for texting the Japanese use symbols that focus heavily on the eyes versus American’s who focus heavily on the mouth.
I have noticed how people from different cultures of my own express showing love differently. A friend of mine told me their father never told him that he loved him verbally but he never questioned it. His father was from a different country and moved here to give his family a better opportunity than the one from their home country. His dad worked majority of the time until his passing. My friend however my friend knew his dad loved him through the things he did like provide for his family. My family however says I love you a lot, whenever we leave each other it is apart of our goodbyes. My expectation of his dad would be that he was a cold person but he was actually very sweet and kind. He is a lovable man so I did not quite understand why I love you was not something said but that is due to my family saying it. I think the display rules can come into play because while I am not knowledge in Hispanic or Caribbean culture I know Western culture is different from a lot of countries so in their country verbally expressing love may not be the norm.
