For Assignment 5, we talked about culture differences between genders. I examined the cultures of Dubai compared to North America, my results concluded that they were similar. The main difference is that women who were in the police field in Dubai had higher confidence than women in the US. They both had suffered from gender stereotypes and being second class citizens due to men. This reminds me of when I learned that for a while in China they had the one child rule and they wanted boys more than girls. They would do away with female babies and today they have one of the biggest male to female ratios in the world. This gives an advantage to women because the men are looking for women but there are fewer women. this to me is the roles reversing in a way because women can pick and choose. While men in most countries have power over everything at least women have a small win in this scenario.

Assignment Takeaway 4
For assignment 4 we discussed gender advertising. What I learned from this assignment is that other places outside of the US are banning certain types of ads based on gender stereotypes. London is one of these places and while it does not ban every thing it is a step. There were similarities that we always have known in terms of body image and gender stereotypes. For body image it goes with men and women because the standard for beauty depends on the society and if you do not fit that mold you are looked down upon. For stereotypes they play on women being traditional housewives and tending to men’s needs and men being breadwinners. These ads sexualize both men and women equally, they try to up sell sex often. Even for ads that do not need to sell sex they will like food ads.

Assignment Takeaway 3
For assignment three we had to reflect on other people’s study abroad experiences. I was interested in what study abroad was like in Rome and I came across Cahleb Derry’s post and it felt relatable. My takeaway from his blogs was that if I can find the opportunity to stud abroad or even travel and experience a different culture do it. Also, while there embraces the culture versus trying to Americanize another culture just to feel at ease with certain things. I am not sure if I can study aboard before I graduate due to it being my senior year and I need internships but Cahleb talked about how it is possible to get an internship in a different country. Working on my diversity certificate that can be a big asset to have because what greater experience of diversity than being in a different culture all together.

Assignment Takeaway 1
Assignment one taught me about the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity and I fell under the Acceptance of Differences as well as Adaptation to Differences. I felt I related to those the most because I view myself as a very accepting person and I try not to let my own bias cloud my judgement of others before getting to know them. I also try to do my best when interacting with others from different cultures because I feel we should all try to understand one another. In another class I learned about the Black Identity Developmental model and while they differ I felt on that model I was between two stages as well. The ones I choose were the internalization and internalization and commitment. They both are essentially very similar to each other in terms of accepting who you are and being able to have mature feelings and be able to live cohesively with others. Internalization and commitment is adding on fighting racism and other forms of oppression. I feel like I have characteristics of that, but I still have more to do to fight against oppress so I feel I am both stages. I think because I do try my best to fight what I can and I think because of who I am I try to make other peoples lives easier by trying to help in the ways I can. This assignment was relevant to me personally because it helped me see how other people may feel about others and where I stand on the spectrum as well. I feel this is a good bases for when trying to be culturally competent.
