I am interested in cybersecurity technology because I was a cryptologist in the Navy and figured it would be best to broaden my knowledge and obtain a degree in the field I already had experience in. While in the Navy I also acted as a security officer. Doing that made me realize the importance of what we do in the cyber world and how much we have to protect. Some other majors that relate to cybersecurity would include business, computer science, engineering, and management. I am currently minoring in business. It is important that if you are going to run a business you have a basic understanding of cyber security to safeguard yourself from any cyber attacks that can occur. Making training available to other employees allows for a safer cyber space so if they are approached with suspicious activity they know the steps to take and how to recover if already attacked. Computer science sets the foundation for learning about cyber security. You learn how to navigate large sets of data which in turn helps analyze what types of data have been compromised by hackers in the cyber security world. Engineering professions in the cyber security field can involve creating and managing hardware, software and security policies that can protect computers, information and networks. Management is useful to cybersecurity because it handles an organization’s efforts to safeguard information resources and ways to improve their security efforts. I believe that it is becoming more of a versatile major because technology has integrated itself into almost every workforce and everyone should have a basic knowledge on how to utilize the many benefits technology has to offer. That being said, with simplicity comes risk. So knowing the ins and outs of how to protect your equipment and data will set anyone for a better career whatever path they choose.
