As technology has been advancing, it has become easier for employees to engage in workplace deviance. This causes a severe risk to organizations. Employees now have the opportunity to do things anonymously which removes the fear of consequences. This can be in reference to online harassment, cyberbullying, stealing confidential information, or a new term, cyberloafing which is spending time online for personal matters while at work. Cyber technology also gives employees access to sensitive information which can range anywhere from financial records to intellectual property. If the employee doesn’t have the proper training or has ill intent the information could be mis-used or stolen for personal gain. This would significantly damage an organization both financially and maybe even their reputation. Online can also be used as a place to put out misinformation. If an employee is disgruntled, they can post in online forums and persuade other employees to partake in workplace deviance. Having constant contact with work because of technology can affect someone’s work-life balance and cause them to retaliate as a form of coping. Lastly, insider threats have become more of an issue. Unhappy employees release access and knowledge to cause harm and can make a cyber attack imminent. This can be avoided by taking a few protective measures. Strengthen cybersecurity measures by having security protocols, access controls, and data encryption. Having training on ethical conduct and providing examples of consequences that deter engaging in deviant behavior. Addressing employee grievances so they feel heard and there is less resentment and frustration. Keeping an eye on employee behavior and making sure there is a healthy work-life balance for the employees to reduce stress. Through all these methods and knowing what to look for in the event that employees feel the need to retaliate, an organization can avoid workplace deviance. As technology advances, the methods are only going to get more complicated. This is where research is important and the well-being of your employees is just as important as the work they are doing.
