Article #1 review
I reviewed an article from the International Journal of Cybercriminology titled Gender-Based Cyber Violence: A Challenge to Gender Equality in Indonesia. This article relates to the elements of social science through the analysis of social media and how it has an impact on women. Looking at this problem through sociological, criminological as well as psychological perspectives to come to a solution. This study wants to address gender equality when it comes to social media. Attempting to see a correlation between the gender of the victim and the type of cyber violence committed. Ultimately, this article wants to determine how gender based cyber violence has weakened Indonesian society through delaying gender equality.
This article relies on the use of secondary data analysis and archive research to aid its hypotheses. Using the previous data to support the points throughout the paper. Such as referencing gender-based cybercrimes that had previously been observed. The paper uses data that was previously made available from past incidents. Incorporating incidents that involved gender as a leading predictor for cyber bullying. Descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive analysis was done in order to determine what resources were used. Incorporating these forms of data analysis furthered the paper’s ability to come to conclusions. Understanding why incidents happened to then in turn come to an understanding on how to better address them going forward. The concept of victimization is a term that helped me comprehend some of the statements in the article. The article implies that women are targeted solely due to their gender. Resulting in women being more likely to receive certain types of cyber bullying. An additional concept that was explored in this article was relativism. How the implementation of technology and social media has aided the problem. This is also seen when the article highlights how the government of Indonesia is not doing enough to decrease the issue.
This topic highlights the concerns of women and other LGBTQ communities by showing how marginalized groups are focused more when it comes to cyber bullying. Going over how certain types of bullying is more prevalent to those that make up such groups. This further hinders the ability for gender equality to arise in this current environment. Gender based cyber incidents continue to cause physiological problems in women which bleeds into other aspects of life. This study brings attention to the importance of holding those online accountable for their actions. Identifying how a country’s lack of action is furthering the problem of equality amongst the country. Providing a possible solution for the Indonesian government recommending that policies should be set in place that address gender-based incidents. This in hopes would start to change the number of incidents that take place.
