Assignment Takeaway 5

The assignment I chose, was the assignment where we had to do something nice for five people within a week. I deeply enjoyed this because helping others truly is a act of selflessness because through out our day to day life we tend to be so consumed in what going on within ourselves, that we forget that we’re all experiencing this complex thing called life. Much like another we did earlier where we had to choose if something was safe or not safe, like driving with a seatbelt, I’d agree that it’s safe but once I get in the car, I don’t put my seatbelt on till I’m ten minutes from my destination. We tend to demand change, and condemn those that oppose actions we deem righteous or fair, but rarely take action ourselves to leave a positive mark on the world. At least I can speak for myself, helping and interacting with people whether it be homeless, or someone who just needs a extra ear, or extra attention that day. You really feel as if your making a difference and doing purposeful work. It helped move from a world of chaos and overindulgence to seeing how I can be a solution and at least steer someone to the direction of a solution. I can compare this assignment to this treatment I’ve been receiving within the last month called network spinal care. And the belief of it, is that our spine begins to twist and stiffen the more we undergo stress, and trauma, almost like were storing more unhealthy memory across our spine. But the major thing my Doctor brought up, is that this constant stress is keeping our bodies in almost a fight or flight state, where we perceive everyone as a possible threat. Being able to focus my attention on helping 5 people allowed me to break those social barriers, and became something I want to carry out through out my whole life.

I chose this representation, because 2 is better then one, we live in a world that emphasizes our differences to the extent that we forget to be their for one another.

ASSIGNMENT TAKEAWAY 4

Social Norms from items to archive 10 is the assignment I am using today, because it allowed me to re-evaluate my views. The more you are able to deconstruct your beliefs and reassemble them, the stronger foundation and devotion you can have towards an idea. When I first stopped celebrating holidays which was my way of violating social norms, it wasn’t hard, but my reasons were skewed. To be honest I knew I was going to be saving tons of money, but also knew I’d be receiving less. With these motives alone, I had no convincing mission statement, around this time I discovered a new faith in Christ I never had before, not only culturally, but religiously, the new social norm was to put down these holidays. It wasn’t until I really began to dig into the history of these holidays, that brought about a true level of conviction. I even found bible verses that spoke against one of the biggest myths we were taught growing up, that Christ was born on December 25th. A statement that was never mentioned in scripture, I found in the book of Jeremiah Chapter 10, that the verses perfectly described Christmas traditions and spoke against it as a pagan practice that the children of Israel were not to partake in. I learned that The Most High provided his people with their own set of customs and rituals. This assignment was fun for me, because of the joy I rediscovered in 2017 when I really took violating social norms to an extreme. As I mature, now being 24, I would never advise being controversial for the sake of controversy, but its a whole other level of power when we are able to examine our traditions, and norms, and simply ask the question, why is this the way it is? Where did this all begin? Another thing I can apply this too, is the family structure. I’m taking a course called, “Psychology of Women” and it really goes depth on social conditioning. Religiously, traditional views are held more of an ideal image for a relationship but I’m also learning of non traditional ways of relationships, where many responsibilities are shared. The more I learn the more social norms I must challenge even in my own circle of ideas, and beliefs cause if not, I become closed of.

I chose these 2 images because self awareness is really what I attained from this assignment, the value of looking at yourself and asking those difficult questions.

Assignment Takeaway 3

The assignment I took away from the most recently, would have to be the blog 5. I chose blog 5 because it forced me to reflect on what affected my score. Whether it was a learning problem, study problem, etc. It was refreshing being able to look over my habits to better improve my future as far as my education. This makes me think of my French class. After every test, quiz, and homework assignment, were able to look over our results, and access the correct answers to better help us study next time.

I chose this visual artifact because I suck at test, and despise them with a passion. I’ve failed many test and quizzes, but I’ve also been triumphant in many of these same test and quizzes. Being able to look over your mistakes, reminds me that we must try, fail, and try again.

The assignment I chose was the last blog we did. Specifically blog 3 and how music helps us relate to people. It’s interesting to know that we can have similar values based on the music we listen too. This was relevant to me because it felt as if I took a trip down memory lane assigning music to people in my life. It made me think back to some of my earliest and deeper memories of the people I love. I also make music which inspired me to want to make music that people can have memories too, music that is timeless and nostalgic. Lately I’ve been learning about attraction and how to build attraction. One of this things was having similar values, with music we can have a lot of commonalities. Nothing unifies culture and merges it like music. Music is a universal language for sure, making this 3rd blog extremely relevant to me.

Representativeness Heuristic - Why you jump to conclusions
Reference- https://productiveclub.com/representativeness-heuristic/

The first image showcases how we take shortcuts to come to conclusions, while the second image, also shows how we come to conclusions, but with the labels we attach to those assumptions. I chose both of these because in psychology of women 323, we’ve been going over stereotypes. Ironically, using heuristics to come to conclusions may be quicker and at times feel more efficient. But when used inaccurately, we can be led to drawing HUGE assumptions, and stereotypes, we can become closed off and hell bent on what use to work, neglecting more evolved methods. Unconsciously we begin to accept ideas face value, rather then investigating the whole matter. I chose this because our perception of the world can be skewed by outside forces such as media and entertainment. One of the assignments we did pertaining to, “are we scaring ourselves to death” showed how a narrative can be pushed so repetitively, that we begin to feel as if whatever media shows, is reality. We also form stereotypes this way, for example. television that consistently portrays certain demographics of people as thugs, communicates to an audience that these are the villains in our communities. That this reality deeply ties into many of the kids and adults in our neighborhoods. Ultimately causing fear amongst individuals we don’t even know. This becomes dangerous, personally I can even think of all the covid scares the past two years. At face value, the simple thing to do is to wear your mask, social distance, and get your vaccination and occasional boosters. But under the surface, articles are beginning to come out that show even with all the measured per cautions, individuals are still at risk. Heuristics, like stereotypes, can identify threats that may truly be misrepresented unjustly. This is relevant to me, because it allows me to reflect on what lenses I choose to see the world, have I bought into a narrative that’s different then my reality ?
