Cybersecurity has always been described to me as more of a people issue more than a computer issue. The machines that we use every day can only find true and false states based off of what we as the user tells them and cannot make decisions themselves. Therefore, it is our job as the user to decide what is deemed safe and trustworthy and what is not. This is the sole focus though of this type of hacking and disinformation plan of attack. In 2023, many people use social media not only as a way of communicating with friends and family, but now also a source of the latest news. Just like this article states though, this is a dangerous and ill-informed practice to use. Social media is an open gate to any and all users, who can pretend to know much more than they actually do, or outright lie and say something that is completely false knowingly. We as Americans are especially susceptible to this, because we are so adamant about free speech. This is not a criticism of Americans wanting total free speech, but rather a statement that it can lead to danger sometimes. When people are allowed to say what they want, where they want, disinformation and misinformation can travel very quickly, which is only multiplied by the dozens when today’s technology is used for it. Just like the journal says, people must understand that with ease-of-access to join a network, in this case being a social media network, it is just as easy for malicious spreaders of negative information to join and spread hate and discontent. People need to be taught, and be willing to learn, about how to identify bots and “trolls” so as to help them know which information to listen to and which information to avoid.
