1. Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.
There can be a few ethic issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals. I will be describing four of those issues in this post.
- Privacy: Privacy of an individual’s information is the most important ethical issue that can arise when storing this data. An individuals Personally Identifiable Information or “PII” is highly sensitive data that can be used to impersonate the individual to steal their identity. When a system is storing this information, the privacy is therefore highly important.
- Security: Security of the system is how the privacy of the information is maintained. Digital and physical security around the information prevents malicious actors from accessing data they should not have access to.
- Integrity: Integrity refers to the nature of files, and ensuring that the file contains the same information when accessed as it does when it is stored. This could be considered an information right as much as possible, particularly where PII is concerned. One digit changing in someone’s stored Social Security Number can indicate that this person is not who they say they are.
- Availability: Availability describes the ability for people with access to a file to be able to access it in a timely manner. This could be authorized staff, the end user, information technicians, etc.
2. Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.
This blog: https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/cybersecurity-by-country/ compares the security of different country’s cyber vulnerabilities. These statistics are broken down into 14 different categories representing different reported types of cybercrimes that occurred within that country. The United States showed in the worst 3 countries in two categories with 14.75% of SSH-based attack origins, and 10.47% of spam email origins. For the SSH-based attack origins, China came first with 28.56% originating from China. Russia takes the lead in spam email originations with 21.27% originating within Russia.
