Environment, Society, and Health Practice Lab

This practice lab presented an interesting way to look at how even in with all the information and knowledge of hazardous materials sources of lead still exist and people can unknowingly be exposed. I enjoyed the real-world scenario and how it challenged our ability to discern the possible sources of lead. Some sources of lead were fairly obvious, but others less so and required researching culturally practices getting a better understanding of how it could be a source of lead exposure. Taking a historical look at how lead was used and how it has gradually been phased out and removed from use was enlightening. The wide use of lead over the decades means that it could be present in many forgot places. Going forward in my professional career I will have to remember to not rule out lead when making health assessments and inspections. Developing appropriate and effective interventions is necessary for proper preventative measures to reduce and prevent populations from being exposed to lead.

Environmental and Occupational Health Risk Assessment Practice Lab

This practice lab actually presented a real challenge of my ability to adapt quickly and make use of all the knowledge and skills I have learned. The topic my group was given was climate change, a fairly broad topic, and while we had time to consider all the possibilities that may be presented to us on the day of mock townhall meeting we still were fully prepared. Wildfires in Northern California was the subject of the townhall meeting, to be honest my group had not even considered this when we were planning for possible climate change related topics. We only had a few minutes to plan and discuss our takeaway message before we presented and to say the least, I was definitely nervous. The experience did test our communication skills and ability to stay calm under pressure. Ultimately, I felt this was a great opportunity to see how well my group could work together. The confidence gained from this practice lab will go a long way to improving my risk communication skills for my future career as a Navy Environmental Healt Officer.

E-portfolio Reflection

The process in creating my MPH e-portfolio has been an interesting experience looking back at everything that I have done over the past two years of the program I am amazed I did so much. The papers, discussions, and projects I have done by myself, and with others gives me a great sense of accomplishment. It is interesting to look back and see the changes and progress I have made in the pursuit of my future career in environmental health. The knowledge and experience I have gained through this program will serve me well as I begin my career as a Navy Environmental Health Officer.
