Authentic Activity

Activity Title: Working with Calendars

Class Description: This activity is intended for students in a beginner to intermediate level language class.

Time: 20-30 minutes

By the end of the activity, students will be able to:

  • Discuss schedules and make plans around a schedule
  • Discuss matters of time
  • Build their own calendar

What authentic materials are being used?  The teacher will share their calendar with their students. This will be printed out and given to students.

How does this activity replicate language students will use outside the ESL classroom?

Making plans with someone is something that students will find themselves doing often. This will help students work around a schedule.

Tasks:

  1. Teacher will show students a sample calendar on the projector, and ask the students questions about it (i.e. When will the person have free time in their schedule to get lunch with a friend?)
  2. Teacher will pass out individual calendars to the students. Students will pair up with a partner to complete the activity. Students will need to make plans with their partner to do different things. They need to find free time together to eat lunch, study, see a movie together, etc. It is okay if the ‘plans’ don’t work out.
  3. Students will rotate and continue the activity for fifteen minutes while the teacher walks around them room providing assistance and corrective feedback.
  4. Students will then be given a blank calendar and tasked with filling out a fake schedule for next week.
  5. The teacher will call on students to try and make plans with them using the schedule the students filled out.
