Before covering the benefits and future use of this framework, it is important that it is first defined. The National Institute of Standards and Technology at the United States Department of Commerce is what is considered NIST. Businesses will use this framework to allow them to properly focus on protecting their cyber data (Understanding the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, 2022). It has been very beneficial to businesses through the years for a number of reasons.

Its adaptability is certainly a benefit. Many have found that it fits their needs, regardless of the size of their company or organization (Bresnahan, n.d.). This flexibility allows for those business owners with limited cybersecurity knowledge to easily follow the new leading standard (Charles, 2021).

The NIST framework can be used in five main areas. These are to identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover (Understanding the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, 2022). With these in mind, identifying the responsibilities of everyone with important information within the workplace is a start. Obtaining this list and setting priorities of protection plays into the further steps within an organization (Understanding the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, 2022).
