I learned things such as common habits, like which countries use formal forms of “you” and which use informal. We looked into college life, and how most students actually stay at home for college. I saw the many buildings they had on campus and that reflected what we have here at Old Dominion University. I also learned about traditional siesta and how nowadays they aren’t so common. Overall, the culture associated with the many different Spanish speaking countries are similar and different in their own ways. Each aspect is what makes the Spanish language unique and vibrant.

Speaking and Pronunciation

The way you speak in Spanish is crucial to being understand and correctly portraying what you want to say. There are different rules that need to follow but many of them follow the same patterns. At first, I was alright at pronouncing words and certain accents. However, now I can tell just how much I have improved. Practicing every day in class allowed me to sound more fluent and talking comes more naturally now. I can feel how much easier it is to speak Spanish and not worry about making mistakes like before.

Interpretive Listening

For our online work we used LingroLearning which was great. On this site I got to hear how to pronounce words and practice the language. I listened to various cultural videos explaining what people in different countries do and why. LingroLearning offered as a great place to hear exactly how the Spanish language is like English in some regards. I learned how to understand and respond to different accents and slang that the different Spanish speaking countries use.

Writing in Spanish

Written assignments showed up many times during this course. Thankfully I picked up on this skill fast. I learned how to conjugate ar, er, and ir verbs and their patterns. This helped me form grammatically correct sentences when writing. Also, I learned how and when to be formal while writing emails, letters, texts, etc. These assignments played a huge role in emphasizing the importance of writing. Overall, I can confidently say that I have a strong foundation in this aspect of Spanish.

Interpretive Reading

This course also provided some reading work. I had to break down texts between friends, letters, emails, etc. The most important thing I learned here is context. It is so important to pay attention to who the speaker is and who they are speaking to. This is because, this alone will determine formality. Context also allowed me to understand a word that I wasn’t familiar with. It helped me draw a conclusion on just what exactly is being said/talked about. This is a versatile skill that applies to both the academic field and work field.

Interpersonal Communication

During this course, I also had the chance to speak Spanish in person. The first time was a project. We had to record a conversation talking to a native speaker in Spanish. For this I thankfully had a friend who was a native speaker. Doing this project helped me apply my knowledge of formality and context to generate good responses. I also got a taste of a possible real-world situation. The other interpersonal experience I had was talking to my instructor. We met a total of 3-times over the year, and this was to see what we learned. This allowed me to reflect on my skills and also get feedback on how I did. After doing this for a few times, it helped build my confidence and asses where I’m at.

Self Assessment and Reflection

The knowledge and skills I have learned in the course have greatly shown. Looking back from where I started, I can see a huge difference. Like I mentioned prior, I struggled with pronunciation but not I am way better than before. Also, I’ve learned the patterns to conjugating verbs so I can use them in the right way. The biggest takeaway I see in myself in my awareness of culture. I never really took into consideration that the Spanish language came with so much background. I got to see the different way people live and act around the world. This course has equipped me with the necessary skills to use in the workforce later on in my future. I am now closer to being even more proficient in the world.

Exploring Culture I have not only learned to speak Spanish but also about the culture that comes with it.
