Criminal justice is one of the majors that relates to cybersecurity because many of the organizations that handle the different cybercrimes that occur have a dedicated team of cybersecurity professionals on their teams. The FBI, CIA, NSA etc. all have dedicated teams for cybercrime, and they all are encompassed in the criminal justice field. There is an important and vital relation between cybersecurity and criminal justice in order to address these cybercrimes. Another major offered by ODU is the interdisciplinary cybercrime major. Students explore cybercrime from an interdisciplinary approach that has a blend of technical and non-technical courses. The undergraduate degree in Cybercrime program merges courses from criminal justice, computer science, philosophy, and information technology. Furthermore, students receive a basic introduction to information technology security. Computer science is another of the majors that relates to cybersecurity in that it provides students with classes that provide a good knowledge foundation for some coding skills that may be necessary for classes. The classes in the computer science major focus on software design and with this knowledge one may be able to understand the risks that certain websites have that are able to be exploited by nefarious people. According to the ODU website for the program, “The Information Systems and Technology program offers a unique combination of business knowledge and technical skills that prepares undergraduate students for success in the highly competitive and increasingly technical business world of the twenty-first century.” With the combination of knowledge gained from these programs, cybersecurity students at ODU are able to choose their own path of classes based on their interests and goals for their future careers in order to be successful. Students take many classes from these majors in order to ensure that they are well-rounded enough to ensure a good basis of knowledge for themselves in a work environment.
