What is deviance? Deviance is the fact of not going with the norms or “accepted” standards. Workplace deviance is the desired and intent to cause harm to an organization, or in this case, a workplace. Cyber technology has been proven easier to create opportunities for workplace deviance since it’s online instead of face to face. Doing harm to a workplace online/ on devices can be easier since the harm would be done on the screen instead of doing harm with people face to face. It is also harder to tell who exactly committed the workplace deviance act since they are behind a screen. An example of the harm these opportunities for workplace deviance is like someone going undercover as an employee, or someone having problems with the organization and wanting “revenge.” The employee that is undercover could be taking information without anyone else in the workplace knowing. If an employee has a problem with the organization and left on bad terms or got fired, they might feel resentment. The employee may take and steal information from the organization to “get back” at those that wronged them, and since they would already have access to the information, it would be easy for them. If the company doesn’t change their security/ passwords, this can lead to hackers and other people to their information and create more opportunities for workplace deviance.
