First Semester Pre-Assessment
Major/Career
My intended major is nursing because I would like to aid others through their health issues not only in the medical aspect. Also, as a patient’s friend or confidant to help them make it through their health journey. Because along with being a healthcare professional, it is a must that I connect emotionally with various patients. As far as my skill set relating to nursing, I have taken many health related courses such as anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biology, and sports medicine. In addition, I am nationally certified as a pharmacy technician and I now work at Walgreens. This experience will allow me to familiarize myself with various medications and to build my healthcare skills. As a nurse I would prefer to work in a private practice; however, I will start at the hospital to gain experience as a nurse. In five years, I will be graduating with my bachelors in nursing and starting my career as a nurse.
MyMajor Report
I would like to learn more about nursing, public health, and health administration.
Transition to College
The biggest difference between college and high school would be the amount of freedom college provides. Also, I feel like college will help me to explore myself and my interests. The biggest challenge I expect this semester would be not feeling completely engaged with the university due to COVID-19. I would like to be more involved on the campus; however, with the pandemic I feel as if I will not be able to get the full college experience. As a commuter the biggest challenge I would experience is transportation issues. I plan to start working the second week of college , as a pharmacy technician at Walgreens and I will be working twenty-five hours a week.
Study Habits
Studying and homework both help to review material. Although, when studying there is a more in depth approach such as through the use of flash cards, color coding, and teaching others to make sure you understand. While homework provides examples and/or problems to solve which is also helpful. I expect to spend the most time for Chemistry 105 and 106N laboratory. I will probably spend less time studying for my writing class.I plan to study at home, and during my study time I anticipate that my most prized possession my phone will distract me a lot. However, in order to prevent this from happening I will simply turn my phone off or give it to my brother until I am done studying. Personally, I prefer to study in the afternoon because I feel awake and refreshed around this time, so I am able to focus. Most of my class is online therefore I have a planner to help me keep up with tasks , and I enter important deadlines in my computer calendar. Also, outside of school I have a social life , and I plan to balance the two by placing my priorities first such as school work and my job. During the weekend I will spend time doing my hobbies and hanging out with my friends. Because school work is a priority , but I do not want to burn myself out mentally or lose my social life. When it comes to studying, writing notes in black ink and rereading , highlighting information I am having trouble with , attending office hours for help. Also, explaining the information to my friends to make sure I understand. For different classes I use different study methods especially for my chemistry class. Specifically for chemistry I watch the video lectures and take notes on the slides as well, and make a quizlet. While for my history class I simply just read the chapters and highlight and write down main ideas and a few details for the idea.
Connecting to Campus
a. One academic resource I plan to use is the tutoring and support resource. b. One non academic resource I may use this semester is the recreation center to help me stay in shape.
c. I believe I will use the writing center to have an extra pair of eyes to review my essays before I submit them.
d. I would like to learn more about the Learning Center such as when and where I can participate.
e. In high school I was a part of the Pink club which was for breast cancer, Relay for Life, the American Red cross, HOSA as an officer , and CHKD Junior group. f. During the semester and college in general I would like to join the American Association of University of Women, simply because I am a bit of a feminist and I love any type of women empowerment. Also, the American Red Cross and I wanted to join the Alpha Kappa Alpha unfortunately membership of sorority is closed. Hopefully throughout the semester I will find more groups that I will enjoy while being involved with the community.
