Journal Entry # 6

How can you spot fake websites? Compare three fake websites (don’t access those sites, of course) to three real websites. What makes the counterfeit websites fake?

Examples of Possible Fake websites:
• TiffanyCoShop.com
• Sheingivesback.com
• Zorasoul.co

Examples of Legitimate websites:

Some ways to detect a fake website:
• Carefully check the URL for misspellings
• Unusual domain extensions
• Lack of HTTPS
• Check for a closed padlock symbol
• Poor design and grammar

Although authentic and fake websites may seem similar, there are ways to verify whether a website is legitimate. When it comes to fraudulent websites, you can usually detect them by checking the URL for misspelled words or, in some cases, added letters to make them seem like genuine websites. Another sign to look for is a poorly designed website with horrible grammar. When it comes to authentic websites, they usually have a closed padlock sign, which will indicate that the website is secure. You can also verify a legitimate website by making sure that the website starts with HTTPS and not just HTTP. You can also verify the website by hovering over the website link, allowing you to confirm the underlying URL.
