Regarding Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, he states that all humans have needs in a hierarchy and that as our lowest needs are met, we focus on our upper-level needs. While this is true, he also believes that our behaviors determine our needs, and as time passes, our needs will begin to change. The needs in the hierarchy are as Listed from lower to upper:
Physiological Needs: Food, Water, Warmth, Rest
Safety Needs: Security, Safety
Belongingness and love needs: Intimate Relationships, Friends
Esteem Needs: Prestige and feeling of accomplishment
Self-Actualization: Achieving one’s full potential, including creative activities
When it comes to physiological needs and how they relate to technology, an example is the fact that to have clean water, we rely on water treatment plants. As far as personal use is concerned, using water-tracking apps helps me remember to consume more water. Technology also plays a big part in the manufacturing of clothing, the building of shelters, and the processing of food. Technology helps satisfy our needs for safety and security by giving us access to security devices and systems that we can use to protect our homes, businesses, and even our physical person in the form of cell phones and personal handheld security alarms. Regarding our need for belongingness and love, technology has been a key factor in how we connect with others. Technology, such as dating apps, social media, multiplayer world simulation games, etc, are just a few ways we as humans have been able to connect and maintain relationships with each other. Esteem Needs such as Prestige and accomplishment come into play with technology when you use different programs in order to progress your career or personal life. An example of this could be websites like Masterclass and Skillshare or the use of online courses for colleges and trade schools. Self-actualization comes into play when you finally get fulfillment in an accomplishment or goal that you achieved. Technology helps with this by receiving empowerment and encouragement in yourself, your brand, or the field you work in. While these needs are all important, I believe the necessity of which needs are fulfilled depends on the circumstances and environment you are in at that period of life.
