SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Reading about Siesta and doing many assignments that required a good amount of research has helped me gain a pretty good understanding of the cultural tradition.

These products and practices helped me understand the values when I did the extra research on it and tried to see the tradition and how it works through many different countries and that made understand how important it is to some countries more than others. When I was reading about how they have to and or get to take naps even if they have work has definitely made me look at the world differently because here in the US a working man or woman don’t usually sleep in the middle of the day because of there career.

Engaging in Communities

(In the pictures are all of my friends that take Spanish)

I think it is very important to engage in your immediate Spanish speaking community it helps you in the long run when you are around the people that are in the same class and is learning the same thing as you.

My experience and participation in communities was attempting to have a full-blown conversation with some friends that are fluent and trying my hardest, but I was having so much trouble, but I feel like if I tried to have a conversation with them now I would do way better than how I was doing a little earlier in the semester.

Interpersonal Communication

The Oral/Audio activities that I use and that help me with my vocabulary outside of class is on Duolingo. While I am learning more vocab on there, these types of questions come up where I need to speak the answer or write it in Spanish, and this helps me with my accent marks and spelling.

With each assignment/activity I am assigned I have that I have been able to answer the questions at a quicker pace then how I was in the beginning of the semester when I would struggle. Something that was difficult for me when it came to oral/audio activities was understanding/comprehending what was being asked and I overcame that by studying every day and being consistent with Duolingo. I have excelled at comprehending now and I can understand a good number of words now. I did not know how I was going to be able to learn Spanish but now I have learned what helps me effectively and what doesn’t help me.

Presentational Speaking

This is my project from unit 4 I was discussing my favorite places on campus and why they were my favorite. I was also talking about my love for the university and its beautiful scenery.

Each presentation I have done for Spanish has gotten better every time I do one. What challenged me in all of my presentations was forming a sentence correctly and I also have trouble with using the right conjugations and using accent marks on the right words. I overcame by studying certain words that I know I am having trouble with and with forming a sentence I just practice with Duolingo. I excel at studying what I have trouble with and getting it at the end of the project. Next time If I am having the same problem I will use some of the different studying ways to effectively get it in my brain.

Presentational Writing

This is how I get prepared for all of my oral exams so I especially did it for my final oral exam. This helps me tremendously with looking at the questions and writing them down and memorizing them so that I am prepared for the exam.

I remember in the beginning of the semester I was always wondering how I was going to study for a oral exam because I was always struggling and when my teacher gave us the questions that are going to be asked I was very happy. I figured I could just write down the answers to the questions and study from there and after that, studying for oral exams are so much easier. I will definitely be carrying this technique into Spanish 102 so I can be successful in that class next semester.

Interpretive Listening

This is one of the many interpretive videos that we watch before every objective in Lingrohub. These videos actually do help you with whatever you are about to learn in whatever objective we are learning at the moment.

When I listen to these videos, I am usually writing down all of the words that are said in the video and I usually write it in English and Spanish so I can know the translation for when I am studying and I also might write down the word in a sentence next to it so I know how I can use it. The only thing that was challenging when it came to writing down all the words would be the amount of words that I have to write. Learning a huge number of words can be challenging but I overcome it by just separating some of them and learn half of them one day and the other half the next day. I find the different cultural traditions interesting in some videos and yes, I have grown with each activity.

Interpretive Reading

This is an article about what makes someone popular and what makes them worth admiring in the Spanish speaking world and this is what I read so I can practice reading Spanish and getting better at that.

This is an example of how readings like this helps me because in order for me to learn I try to read the whole thing and see if I understand it. If I stumble and have trouble on some of words I just write them down and study those words after. My takeaway from this reading are most people that are admired in Spanish speaking communities have the adjectives of talented, independent, faithful, hardworking, heroic and courageous. With each assignment my reading gets better and better and I am noticing my skills heighten with every reading.
