There can be many ethical issues when it comes to storing electronic information about other individuals. Especially with the advancement of technology today. There are more and more people using advanced technology as well. The more that technology is used for storing personal information the more chances are that issues will arise with keeping the information confidential. The first ethical issue is the inappropriate use of data. This could mean a variety of different things but one example is using another person’s personal information for their own personal gain. The second ethical issue is keeping an individual’s personal data for longer than necessary. This issue is pretty self-explanatory, after the information has served its purpose it needs to be erased. The third ethical issue is selling customers’ personal information to third-party companies for the purpose of business. This issue is a huge concern because if a person has someone’s personal information they are being trusted with it. If the person exploits another’s personal information they are not only doing a deed that is very illegal they are also betraying their customers or consumers. The fourth ethical issue that arises when storing electronic information about individuals is not announcing data breaches that deal with customer’s personal information. When a company is entrusted with an individual’s personal information they should take that very seriously. If their personal information got into the wrong hands it could have very serious consequences for said individual. For these reasons, there should be a specific code in place with every business and company. Every employee should be on the same page. There should be guidelines on how to prevent, how to proceed if something were to happen and how to recover if something does happen. If an employee were to exploit the company it could ruin the companies reputation. This is to protect not only the customer but also the company itself.
