Interactions
The last 100 hours of my internship were fairly different from the first, although my interactions throughout the corporation stayed the same. I worked mostly in Utilization Case Management for the second half of my internship. While learning from the clinical caseworkers in Utilization Case Management I had interactions with external organizations that include TRICARE caseworkers, legal guardians of residents, and various amount of outpatient care facilities. Some of the internal organizations or departments that I had interactions with included residents, therapists, psychologists, nurses, human resources, medical records, and finance.
Intern Duties
During the last 100 hours of my internship, I shifted to focusing on one department as opposed to three departments as I did in the beginning half of my internship. Almost All of my internship days were spent with Utilization Case Management. This is due to the Company wanting to give administrative departments in need the most help. In this department, some of my duties included learning how to complete resident reviews and submitting these reviews to insurance. These reviews ensure that the Barry Robinson Center will be able to get paid for the resident’s length of stay. Some of my duties also included checking on the insurance’s website and keeping track of if the residential stay had gotten approved or denied. I also continued to find appropriate aftercare for children that would be discharged within the next couple of months as well as filing residential care authorizations and educational authorizations in the correct resident’s file.
Skills and Knowledge
While working in the Utilization Case Management department, I put into practice some of the procedures that I had learned in the first 100 hours. I started to learn how to build relationships with outside organizations that are needed to be successful in the approval of residential authorizations through insurance. I have learned how to better multitask by working on multiple cases at one time and figuring out which file had priority over others. A lot like the first half of my internship, I sat through professional meetings that included speaking about the discharges of residents in order to make sure that each department was on the same page. I also gained skills and problem-solving by observing critical mistakes that were made and how the company solved them effectively. I used some of the communication skills that I had gained during my internship during the various calls and emails placed during my internship duties.
