Exploring Culture
One practice that helped me understand cultural perspectives is taking a siesta, which originates in Spain. I learned that many people in Spanish-speaking countries take a break in the middle of the day to rest or nap, allowing them to recharge before continuing with their workday. By learning about the siesta, I understood better the value of taking a break and prioritizing rest in daily life. This perspective also revealed the importance of balance and self-care in achieving a healthy work-life balance. It caused me to work through the misconception that being constantly busy is the key to success and instead appreciate the benefits of taking time to slow down and rest. Through learning about the siesta, I gained a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture’s cultural values and attitudes, particularly the importance of rest and balance. This product and practice challenged my worldview, as I had previously viewed productivity as the most crucial aspect of daily life. It revealed the challenges of prioritizing rest and self-care in a culture that often prioritizes productivity and work. Overall, this experience taught me the importance of being open-minded and receptive to learning about different cultural perspectives and how this can ultimately lead to personal growth and understanding.
Engaging in Communities
It is very important to engage within your community if it’s either local or global. It is very important to engage with your immediate community because those are the people you are around and those are the people you have to work with. It is also important to interact with your global community because those are the people that share the same values and characteristics as you do. It is important to connect with all people in your community.
Presentational Speaking
This semester we did a cooking video as one of our projects. In this video we explained how to cook a certain dish from the past and what ingredients to use. Also this semester we had to do a family project. Within these two projects I faced the challenge of being able to speak the language. That has always been a struggle for me but for these projects I was able to stay calm and remember how to use the language. I also came into an issue with the cooking project, I wasn’t able to cook because our kitchen was under reconstruction so finding a way to still make a video about cooking without being able to cook was a challenge but I was able to overcome it.
Presentational Writing

This semester we did a few writing projects, which included writing about a club and writing about health and different health issues. These projects were different from the speaking because since we were speaking the language we had to be able to show our understanding within our projects. With the club project I think I could grow by taking my time with how I organize my information and how I design my project itself. With the health project I’d say the same thing. I think I excelled on knowing what needed to get done and just didn’t execute it 100%. I think I could do better by taking my time and giving myself more time to prepare for these.
Interpretive Listening
This semester we did listening activities within our classwork and homework. Most of the listening activities were done through Lingo Learning. These were assignments where we had to listen to the clip and figure out what’s the right word to use or what words they mentioned within the clip. What was challenging for me was listening to something before I knew all the words. It was almost like a puzzle. I overcame it by learning most of the words that were struggling me. From these activities I learned how to better understand listening to the language and how to listen to how certain things are said in the language. I’ve grown from these by being able to understand and listen to the language better than I could last semester.
Interpretive Reading
Borrador-para-el-PROYECTO-UNIDAD-9-martes-30-de-marzo-de-2023What was your takeaway from the reading? How have you grown with each assignment?
This semester we got a few reading assignments just like our listening assignments they came in class or on Lingo. Most of our homework was reading assignments such as filling in the blanks, matching, reading paragraphs to better understand the people that we are learning about. I think that it was a challenge just like the listening to understand words i hadnt seen yet, the sentences seemed unclear to me. I overcame these by expanding my vocabulary and learning the language. What I found most interesting was some of the characters we got to read about within our homework. It made the homework more interesting and easier to concentrate on.
