SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Understanding the cultural differences was a challenge at first due to that fact of their being a language barrier. But what helped me understand them the most was going over certain homework assignments that showed us the things they might do compared to us.

Me looking at the Homework Mainly helped with understanding some of the things they may do or celebrate on certain days that we don’t do in the states. Learning them and understanding them really shows you what kind of things that we don’t see or experience go on and how its planned and the process of these differences. I thought that all round the world we all celebrated the same thing but i was totally wrong, like for an example all the massive parades that go on that only may revolve around certain cloths or certain types of foods, and it just shows how well another country can come together in mass for an event.

Engaging in Communities

This course showed me the importance of understanding one culture and or community’s and how its important to stick together as one and build around our community to support our future goals.

One of the assignments that helped me out with understanding them was the UGR assignment witch was about a university out of the States and on the events that they have as well, information on UGR was provided with a YouTube link https://www.expatica.com/es/education/higher-education/study-in-spain-101452/ and us learning about there events and what they celebrate was also provided with another YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbQK8hSKmFU

Interpersonal Communication

In my Spanish class we had a few assignments that made us thing about our personal likings and helped us understand how different our language is compared to Spanish

One of our main conversations that we have been doing in the flip grids. they allow us to communicate to our classmates and exchange information on what we my be in school for and who our favorite people are. From the begging I was extremally scared and I had no idea what I was going to be getting my self into, just due to the fact that I’ve never had to speak one on one or two a whole class in another language. But once you get over that the most important thing to realize it that we are all in the same class and should be around the same pace. That being knowing some Spanish from high school or nun at all. And that helped out a lot its just funny seeing every one struggle and your not the only one. I mostly excel at the home work assignments because I can sit down and understand them more then having to speak to some one. I just feel like if I can go at my own pace and be calm ill do a lot better rather then having a conversation with my professor, and that freaking me out because i might get a bad grade or say something wrong.

Presentational Speaking

So far we have had to do 4 flip grids and 1, one on one conversation the first one just being the introducing phase when you just join the class, Then the second one we had to do was a fill in the blanks type of conversation where we had to fill in all the portions that our professor stopped talking in and tried to make it as much as a real conversation as possible. Our third and fourth assignments was pretty much the same. and our one on one conversation was in the being of the class where we talked about our majors our name and where we are from.

the conversation where we had to fill in all the portions that our professor stopped talking in and tried to make it as much as a real conversation as possible. The hardest thing id say with these assignments was the whole recording prosses due to them being on flip grid we don’t have all the time in the world to talk so we have to play her audio in the back and then talk when she’s done talking, then play her audio and a whole back and forth prosses. But once you do a few of them after a while it can just be a little easier. they are still pretty hard due to the fact that we aren’t talking to a real person just recorded audio. But with time and practice I’m sure I will get way better at having an actual conversation.

Presentational Writing

So our writing assignments was where simple and asked us questions on Why you should study Spanish. How Spanish would improve your degree and Would you feel comfortable doing the same here in the States? Have you ever greeted someone with two kisses on the cheek sharing your experience with the class. What do you think about it? Does this way of greeting have PROS and CONS?. Another one being One of the oldest universities in Spain is the UGR (University of Granada).Do a comparison between the University here and the UGR in Spain. Have you studied outside of the United States? Where? How was your experience? Are you planning on doing a study abroad?. Then our last one talking about our favorite person

The first Two assignments where simple and i enjoyed doing these the most. I felt like I did the best in those because I like to express my feelings and opinion things so writing is never an issue. The one that had us doing the research on UGR was probably the most time consuming and made me use more critical thinking and understanding what goes on in other countries, and how much more of a community they are towards each other and how they help each other out and the surrounding areas.

Interpretive Listening

Our listening assignments we had to do where on lingro learning and some quiz assignments. where we had to listen to what was being said and drag or click the right answer or place it in the right areas.

The things I’ve listened to really helped me understand the pronunciations of some words or how sentences are supposed to be structured. The most frustrating thing that happened when doing these where me trying to understand them, just due to the fact that each person spoke differently and at a different pace. id wish the audio was clearer but I had to work around that. Another challenging thing was the similarities in some words or how some of the word not fully being pronounced due to it being in Spanish.

Interpretive Reading

One of the biggest readings that we had to do for me that i had fun doing and researching was they topic on UGR we where provided with this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XatNlUY9n2I and a few other places i had to use was google and try to find more information on it.

The topic consisted of one of the oldest universities in Spain is the UGR (University of Granada), Do a comparison between the University here and the UGR in Spain. Have you studied outside of the United States? Where? How was your experience? Are you planning on doing a study abroad? answering these questions where not the worst thing due to the fact that most of my answers where me not wanting to or the relation not being there. But it made me think about going to other countries and experiencing them, just to see what the language barrier would be like and what difficulties id have. There University looked super interesting and it made me want to look into other out of country University’s
