Mid-Semester Reflection

My learning style is NT, an intuitive thinker. After reading the description of an intuitive thinker, I was surprised because it says they should not be the leader of the group but I always like to take charge and be the leader. It also surprised me because it says my type would make good architects or engineers and that’s not what I want to be, at all. I learned that someone with my style of learning does better if they ask a lot of questions, also if they review the bigger picture before jumping into something which I never thought of before.

I normally study in the library, there’s hardly any distractions there. Sometimes I try to study in my room my there are too many distractions such as the TV, my roommate, or wanting to lay in bed. I try to study around 4-8 because that is when I have the most energy because I take naps before then. One study strategy that is listed for my type of learning is reading the chapter before you learn something so that you can understand how everything fits together. I use this strategy for my chemistry class. Before I go to class I read the chapter that we will be learning about that day, it helps me because while we’re learning it step by step in class I already know what the steps are and how to do it, this helps me understand and not get frustrated.

College has not been what I expected. I expected to have less free time than I have. I expected professors to meaner and more strict than they are but so far all of my professors are pretty nice and understanding. I also expected there to be more work than there is, instead of a lot of little busy work there’s a handful of highly important assignments. My toughest challenge with moving away and living on campus is that i’m only 17 so i’m not able to go to the doctor alone or buy myself certain medicine like Nyquill or Benadryl. The easiest challenge for me to overcome was managing my time well. I have a planner that helps me do so and I write down everything that I have to do.

During this semester I have had a lot of personal things happen and when I needed guidance and someone to talk to I went to the counseling center at ODU and they helped me every step of the way. Another resource I would like to learn more about at ODU is the tutoring center. I would like to learn more about this because sometimes I find myself stuck on certain questions or chapters. My friend Reagan who I met through my sorority has helped me a lot this semester, she always keeps me in check and makes sure I have completed everything I need to do. She’s also there for me anytime i’m sad or need someone to hangout with. I went to multiple interest meetings for sororities and I decided to join one. I decided to join because it’s a great support system and a way to get involved.
